PingPongforCHARITY Tournament Rules

Round Robin to Single Elimination Bracket

A Round Robin format begins the tournament and once completed, each player will be moved to a single elimination bracket.  There will be two groups for each age category, except for the Seniors Challenge which will have one.  Format of the matches will follow the same best 2 out of 3 games.  All championship games for each age group will be played on Tables 1 and 2.

Scoring
Players keep their own scores. If there is a discrepancy that cannot be resolved, players must agree to play point over. A match is played best 2 of 3 games.  For each game, the first player to reach 11 points wins that game, however a game must be won by at least a two point margin.

A point is scored after each ball is put into play (not just when the server wins the point as in volleyball).

The edges of the table are part of the legal table surface, but not the sides.

Flow of the Match
Each player serves two points in a row and then switch server. However, if a score of 10-10 is reached in any game, then each server serves only one point and then the server is switched. After each game, the players switch side of the table.

Legal Serve
The ball must rest on an open hand palm. Then it must be tossed up at least 6 inches and struck so the ball first bounces on the server’s side and then the opponent’s side.

If the serve is legal except that it touches the net, it is called a let serve. Let serves are not scored and are replayed.

Determining Who Serves

Players determine who gets first serve and alternates each game thereafter.  One player hides a ball in left or right hand under the table.  Second players guesses which hand has the ball.  If correct, that player decides to serve or receive.  If wrong, player holding the ball decides.  For each additional game, players switch sides and start of serve.

Match Completion

Matches are completed when a player wins 2 of 3 games.  Each player will play a match with each other player in their round robin once.  For round robins with less than 5 players, you may play a player more than once.

Awards Ceremony

Once each tournament concludes, awards will be given to 1st and 2nd place finishers.
